Creative Critical Reflection Draft 1
In our film, The Neighbor, we utilized conventions such as costumes, camera shots and angles, fonts, and incidental music. These conventions led our film to be successful and allowed us to convey our film's meaning, of horror, towards our target audience.
In our film, Patty is the antagonist and Ally is the protagonist, so we decided to have Patty's costume symbolize her character, which is a creepy stalker. In our film, Patty wore all black and dark black makeup around her eyes to symbolize the creepiness within her character and to entice the audience in her appearance. Relating to the movie Hush, the antagonist was wearing all black, which is similar to Patty's costume. Ally, Ashley, and Sarah all wear similar outfits to fit their character's personalities, which are popular high school teenagers. The main character within this group of girls is Ally since Patty is obsessed with her and wants to become a new version of Ally. Ally's costume consists of a high-class pair of jeans and a cute flowy shirt that represents that she is a popular high school teenager who also acts as a rich teenager. Another convention that we utilized was our camera shots/angles.
A camera shot that we utilized was a mid-shot of Patty creepily starting to open the sliding glass door into Ally's house. This shot gives the audience a sense of fear that Ally could possibly be in danger since a creepy stalker, Patty is wandering inside her house. Another shot we utilized in our film was establishing shot which establishes the setting for our film. In this shot, it represents the contrast between Ally and Patty's house. It also represents their characters and how Ally is a rich teenager in a nice house, whereas Patty lives in a more run-down house, which reflects her character. One last shot we used in our film The Neighbor is the rule of thirds. In this shot, we showed Patty's house while she was in the shot, creepily walking and singing Ally's name.
Another convention that led our film to be successful was our use of incidental music. In our film, The Neighbor, we used creepy and intense music to intensify the scene of Patty walking around Ally's house and into her room. This creates a sense of fear and anxiousness for the audience since they know something bad is happening while the characters in the movie do not. In the movie Get Out and A Quiet Place incidental music was utilized to add a sense of fear and tension, as we did the same for our film to be successful.
One last convention that we used in our film was the font used for our opening credits and title. The font we used in our film was Courier New Bold, which is shown as a modern-like and creepy text for our film. This allowed us to convey a creepy mood for our audience with the style of text utilized to match the genre of our film.
Looking at the different social groups, there are many different cliques and groups of people in movies. In our movie, The Neighbor, Ally, Sarah, and Ashley are a small clique within themselves and are considered the popular teenagers in high school. This reflects on social groups and cliques in real life as well since in high school, there are many different cliques and shut out people who are not like them and look like them based on their appearance. In our film, we also included the use of having a female lead role since females are not generally used as lead roles. In movies such as Get Out, Insidious, and Sinister the lead roles are all played by men which represent gender discrimination.
