Use of Conventions

We conveyed our genre, horror/thriller, through our camera shots, angles, and sounds. The first shot in our film was an establishing shot which shows the main setting of our film. We are trying to establish the major contrast between the two houses; which further reflects Ally's life (as a rich teenager) and Patty's life (poor, unsanitary, and lonely). The next shot we decided to use was an over the shoulder shot when Ally and Ashley are getting ready for their fun day and Sarah calls Ally because she is at her house. This shot establishes that all three friends will be hanging out that day and that Sarah is already at Ally's house. We also decided to include a point of view shot showing Ally seeing Patty for the first time since she just moved in. In this shit, we were trying to establish where Patty was standing and what she was doing when the girls saw her. An important camera angle we utilized in our film was a high angle showing Patty laying on Ally's bed, holding a picture of Ally. This angle establishes Patty's obsession with Ally, which makes the audience feel as if she is psychotic. Besides using camera shots and angles, we also included a sound effect. As a group, we decided it was best to input scary and intense music when Patty breaks into Ally's house and goes into her room. This established a sense of suspense for the audience, considering that the audience knows she is in Ally's room when Ally suspects nothing bad.
Our film establishes the issue of judgemental people and how it affects others. In our film, Ally, Sarah, and Ashley are judgemental towards Patty. For example, at the beginning of our film, when the three girls see Patty, Ally looks at her and yells, "What are you looking at creep?!". This shows that she is rude and judgemental when she has not even had the chance to get to know Patty. Ally's two other friends, Sarah and Ashley, always stick by Ally's side to make her feel better and agree with everything she does and says.
